An Open and Affirming Progressive Christian Community
At First Congregational Church, we believe that God’s welcome is always bigger than our own.
- Communion is for everyone, regardless of age, religious background, or current beliefs.
- We celebrate LGBTQ+ leaders, members, and families; we practice using the pronouns and names members and visitors indicate to us; we continue to educate ourselves about the needs of our LGBTQ+ siblings.
- Becoming a member of the church involves a pledge about behavior, not about belief. Baptism is a sacrament through which we celebrate God’s faithfulness to us, but it is not a requirement for membership.
- We form lasting relationships with immigrant and refugee neighbors, because hospitality to these neighbors is something the Hebrew and Christian scriptures emphasize.
- Children are valued in the life of the church; we build spaces where children and families can participate comfortably in worship and friendship, we train our staff and volunteers in Safe Conduct practices, and we collaborate with organizations housed in our space, like the Kalamazoo Drop-in Day Care Center and the Children’s Nature Playscape to support the children of Kalamazoo.
- God is and always will be calling us to draw the circle wider–to improve our ability to welcome and love the people God already loves.
Our Purpose
To welcome all at Christ’s table, and to inspire Change through Christ’s teachings. We want to nurture Faith through prayer, worship and joyful service and experience the meaning of God’s Word.
Our Staff
From Sunday mornings to weekdays, our staff support our ministry.

We are a member church in the UCC
The United Church of Christ (UCC) is a progressive, dynamic denomination offering Christ’s extravagant hospitality and welcome to all. We are grounded in Scripture while listening for the “Still Speaking” God.
